How to Pick the Right BBQ Grill For You

Few things can help turn your backyard into the ultimate retreat quite like a BBQ Grill. A grilling area can become the ideal gathering place for family and friends at almost any time of year. Whether you`re getting ready for the big game or having some friends over for a summer party, the grill offers the perfect place to gather round and prep hamburgers and other favorites.

While some grills may look fairly similar to each other when you are shopping online, there are actually a wide range of differences that you will want to be aware of. Before you make your purchase, understanding which type of grill best fits your lifestyle and cooking preferences will ensure that you make a selection you will be happy with.

There is no [right" or [wrong" grill to buy. But knowing some basic factors that differentiate grills from each other is an absolute must for finding the right fit for you.

Fuel Type

One of the biggest considerations when choosing a BBQ grill is the type of fuel it uses. There are five main types of [fuels" that can be used for a BBQ grill, and your selection will have a big impact on your cooking experience and future maintenance needs

Charcoal: Pieces of charcoal are considered the "classic" fuel for grilling. You put the briquettes on the grill, light them up, and once they're hot, you're ready to cook. Charcoal is considered to have a more distinct flavor than an electric or gas grill. However, cooking with charcoal can be a little more complicated, especially when it comes to achieving the right cooking temperature. It is generally recommended to arrange the charcoal in a pyramid on the charcoal grate (below the surface you are grilling the food on). You'll also need lighter fluid and a lighter to start the fire. The coals usually need to be heated for 10 to 15 minutes to start grilling. While charcoal requires a little more patience, it imparts a rich, unique flavor to the user. But keep in mind that you'll also need to empty out the cold ash and clean the grill after use to keep it functioning properly.
Electric: Electric grills are less common than other fuel types, but are still worth mentioning. Electric grills tend to be smaller and use a heating element to provide electrical resistance that converts electrical energy into heat. While not the most efficient source of cooking energy, it can still heat up the grill quickly. Grill purists argue that electric cooking doesn't add any flavor to food. However, if you don't plan on grilling very frequently, this could be an easy, low-maintenance solution.
Propane: Propane gas provides a lot of energy and allows your grill to heat up quickly. All you have to do is connect a tank of propane to the tank and your grill is ready to go. Propane grills are also easy to use because you just turn a dial to adjust the heat. Many propane grills feature multi-zone cooking or indirect heat, allowing you to cook different foods (such as meat and vegetables) at different temperatures at the same time. Propane grills are generally low-maintenance, so they're a good choice for anyone who plans to use the grill on a regular basis. Propane tanks are also relatively cheap and safer than they used to be (although you should still try to keep them away from other heat sources as much as possible).
Natural Gas: Natural gas can be a little expensive to set up, but it will make it easier for you to manage your fuel needs in the long run. A Natural Gas Grill connects to the natural gas line that already enters your home. This fuel is not sold in cans like propane. This is a great option if your home already runs on natural gas, as you only need to extend your current gas line. If you don't already have natural gas, another option may be better for you. Plan carefully before installing a natural gas grill, as it will be a permanent installation. However, this fuel is easy to use because you don't need to worry about buying replacement fuel after the grill is installed.
Wood: Finally, there are wood chip grills. Those who use wood chip grills swear that this fuel provides the richest, most unique flavor of any grilling method. There are many types of wood pellets to choose from, and different wood species will impart different flavors to your meat. Wood pellets burn slowly at high heat, making them flexible and easy to use, even with bacon. While wood pellets are generally more expensive than charcoal, they tend to last longer, making them a great choice for the real grilling enthusiast.
